The WKA North American Tournament took place in Richmond, VA. Though I didn't compete, I decided to tag along with the team. The atmosphere at martial arts tournaments is infectious: the smell of liniment oil, the echo of punches against hand mitts, fighters shadow boxing in obscure corners of the arena, all of it is so exciting. Besides, my good friends at Nak Muay Allstar needed some help at their table so I was in. Anddddd since I wasn't competing, I could eat WHATEVER I wanted without side-eye from my coach. So my teammate Lisa and I went on a search for the perfect donut. Why donuts? Who knows. Nevertheless, we found Sugar Shack Donuts on Lombardy Street. One word: WIN.
First of all, the menu changes almost hourly based upon what the staff feels like making that day. Therefore, you get to read your choices from a neat chalkboard, which made the teacher in my a little giddy. There were so many interesting choices, we spent a good twenty minutes debating over our choices. Unable to choose just one each, we settled upon a dozen to include: Swedish Fish, Powdered, Sprinkled, Snickers, Strawberry, Samoas, and my personal favorite Sea Salt Caramel. They were A-MAZING. The donut itself was moist and did not have the "I've sat around for hours" feel that donuts get when they, well, sit out for hours. The icing was sweet but not overwhelmingly so. And the variety of toppings was a welcomed change of pace from your typical chain stores. I do wish the box could have been a wee bit bigger so that the donuts were not overlapping, but that's just nitpicking at this point. If you're ever in Richmond, VA and happen to drive by Sugar Shack Donuts, do yourself a favor and STOP. You won't be disappointed.
Yay: Lots of different flavors to choose from with menu options changing by the minute.
Boo: The box was too small, causing some icing to rub off.
